Talking about the emergence of local brands and institutions, cities and regions in advanced economies face fierce international competition for footloose business and investment, spurred by loosened trade barriers, more efficient and integrated global transportation and communication systems, and the emergence of new competitive markets. As a result, practitioners and policy-makers who are charged with fostering economic development have to ensure the strategies they pursue to position their locale to have greatest opportunities for prosperity. The shrinking of the world is deep, inevitable and irreversible globalization is coming for us and we have know clue its colonization on another level.
The concept of globalisation is totally to disseminate intended ideologies, across the world through technology ideas and aid in order to bring people of the world into one society created by man. BACS191012
In my view, globalization is how one wants to make use of it. Most countries have taken advantage of it to spread their marketing tentacles and making money out of it whereas others view it as cultural imperialism therefore are not making it a point to apply it to their arena of development. As a result of this, there is the classification of people i.e. the rich and the poor, the developed and the underdeveloped. But if people/nations took equal advantage of globalization, perhaps, the differences wouldn't be as much as it is now.
In fact the more I read works by different authors on the concept of globalization, the more contradictory I find their positions and it only confirms my personal opinion that it is a subtle form of colonialism. One can advance all the argument that the idea of globalization has been with since Adams was created but its current subtlety promotion by the world economic superpowers clearly talks about Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s (Ghana’s first president) reference to neo-colonialism. He foresaw this happening warned his compatriot African leaders at the time. So far the most interesting and sarcastic work I read is that by Rev. Dr. Stan Duncan, United Church of Christ in Abington, Abington, MA, for the Globalization Coordinating Committee. Here are some take-ways for me from his work: Dr. Stan Duncan also criticizes certain issues: ‘’One rule requires a country to open up its economy to the world by eliminating quotas and tariffs. This forces local fledgling businesses to compete on what is called an “even playing field” against huge, often subsidized, multinational corporations. Mexico, for example, accepted this rule when it signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. One result was that its thousand-year history of growing corn was in ruins just a few years later. Indigenous farmers could not compete with highly subsidized U.S. agribusiness which began to dominate the Mexican market.’’ A number of recent studies have shown, however, that while the evidence is spotty on whether “liberalizing” (deregulating) the flow of money contributes significantly to economic growth, there is mounting evidence that it actually harms the poor. Researchers found that while deregulation usually increased international trade flows, it seldom benefited the poor. These studies found that, contrary to glowing reports in the press, economic growth around the world was actually better before the age of intense economic globalization than during it. Instead of triggering an explosion of rapid growth fuelled by international economic integration, the era of economic globalization has actually been a time of economic slowdown in some regions of the world, with actual declines in others. Even in those areas where growth rates rose, for example, in Southeast Asia, countries were nonetheless growing faster before the time of rapid globalization than afterward. The present global economic system will consume anything in its path in order to continue to grow larger to benefit its creators. These the stark realities of economic globalization.
In my opinion, I believe Globalization is an unavoidable concept that has come to stay even though it has been in existence for a very long time. We have to pay attention to it because it exists in everything we do; from communication,to food, to entertainment. If we are able to identify the positive aspects of globalization and use to to our advantage and develop ourselves, our communities and nation in the long run, we would not see it as "colonialism" or "imperialism". The shrinking of the world thanks to globalization is too clear to deny the fact that, there are positive and negative aspects because physical, mental, geographical barriers have been broken. It is up to us to educate ourselves so that we can get the best of this phenomenon which is present in all aspects of our lives, be it religiously, culturally, economically or socially. BACS 19662
Fantastic way bringing our ideas together after lecturing hours.
I see the concept of globalization as a modern tactics to recolonize the world by projecting white supremacy. In as much as we " the underdeveloped country" will be enlightened by way of appreciating and understanding the concept and structuring our system to embrace the trend, we will be brainwashed to accept that good things only happened in the white mans land. As Nyaxose put it,ie "it is a subtle form of colonialism" and "One can advance all the argument that the idea of globalization has been with since Adams was created", I think the concept should be narrowed down to capture the developmental concept in the African continent rather than focusing and suggesting that all good people/things are always from the west
Globalization has been in existence since ages...What we see now is just the modern aspect of globalization. In as much as globalization is a blessing(making the world a better place) ,its also more of a curse in a sense that the powerful countries(core) still have influence over the peripheral especially when it comes to controlling the world market. They extend help to us and then tell us how to manage what ever aid they have extended Bacs19504

I agree very much with Mo. There is the need to position a country's economy to gain enough advantage economically.
