Globalization challenges some of our most fundamental distinctions about politics and social life—distinctions between local and global, proximity and distance, domestic and foreign, national and international

Globalization continues to make the shrink the world into a smaller space connected by the internet. It continues to eliminate distance, intellectual and physical space, mobility, and cultures.

The benefits are endless access to opportunities across the globe. The negatives are intrusion, disruption, diffusion, distraction, hybridization and dwarfing of indigenous industries, cultures and ways of life.

It continues to produce effects, both negative and positive.

The Creative Philosopher said...

The internet (the digital divide) is the caste system of the 21st century. It classifies people into categories and by extension, their levels of access to opportunities. From the introduction of the computer, through to today's super technologies, the digital divide continues to eliminate those who cannot cope with it whilst making those who can speak its language the beneficiaries.

The digital divide, is the new separator of society. It will continue to eliminate and discriminate in terms of opportunities in the areas of health, education, employment, religion and social participation.

It is gradually becoming the 'new normal'.

The fact that heterogenisation is a mixture of cultures still don't make the societies or citizens the same globally. For instance in politics, culture and economics and by the virtue that we practice democracy by appointing and electing our national and regional house of chiefs, societies still instool and installing chiefs traditionally. Economically with the use of modern farm implements, societies uses the traditional implements like cutlass and hoe.

Research has shown that globalization's negative effects are making the richer more richer and the poor more poorer.
The News Economics Foundation has released a data to show that the global economy, run by the western politics and bankers are always acting as a banking hoovers.
It's a fact that these hoovers are rather sucking more wealth and resources from these poorer nations and placing them in the hands of the richer nations.
From 1980-2002, Africa's experts fell from around 6% to 1.5%, causing Africa to attract about only 6% of the total FDI inflows to developing countries. Moreover, from the period of 2000-2004, the average African unskilled worker earned 55cents daily whereas, while the average white collar worker brings home at least $120, per week..

IS GLOBALIZATION REALLY GLOBAL OR ONLY A RESPECTER OF CERTAIN NATIONS AND CONTINENTS?

Kofi Annan once said that," challenging globalisation is like challenging the natural laws of gravity. But on the other hand, looking at globalisation in the contemporary world it is same as colonisation or imperialism where it benefits the self acclaimed developed nations. This has resulted in huge financial gains on their part while the advert promoted image of other countries see developing nations suffer or bear the grunts. Media globalisation is the weapon used to promote Africa and other countries who are classified as developing in a negative light.

By this, they proccess the sea water into a portable drinking water for the benefit of Teshie and Nungua communities.

On Cosmopolitanism...

It must be noted that People are different, and there is much to learn from our differences. Because there are so many human possibilities worth exploring, we neither expect nor desire that every person or every society should converge on a single mode of life. Whatever our obligations are to others (or theirs to us) they often have the right to go their own way.

An attempt to create a "global citizen" must be carefully thought of due to the diverse nature of individuals, States and Cultures. For there are two categories of people -
those who deny the legitimacy of universality and those who deny the legitimacy of difference.

Unknown said...

BACS 19801

On Cosmopolitanism....
Cosmopolitanism has two faces -Culture and Politics and the balance between these two cluster of ideas is the antidote to the creation of a global citizen. While some people are less rooted in their culture, others are complexly rooted while some others are totally rootless. Creating "citizens of the world" which I think Cosmopolitanism is all about is to be able to identify the diverse nature of these individuals and make sure that they leave positive marks on one another, eschewing hate, greed, terrorism, racism, Islamophobia among others - and make this planet a better one for us all.

Globalization, culture, cosmopolitanism and technology all together, are interdependent perspectives that will take decades to debate on.

It appears that there is a strong push and incentive towards cultural homogenization or sameness in our current culture and one disadvantage of homogenisation that comes to mind is losing some aspects of each individual culture. For instance, dying languages, the loss of music, dances, recipes, or clothing styles native to a certain region.

To answer the question as to whether globalization has made the world the same or different, I will say yes to some point and no on the other hand. Yes in the sense that since the evolution of globalization, many countries and people have had the opportunity to share and spread their cultures, policies, economical ideas and beliefs all over the world which has in turn made the world seem like one whole place thereby making us the same. On the other hand globalization has again given some countries, cultures among others the superiority over others making them appear to be the best while others are not because of how less they have embraced it and this makes us appear to be different.

Is no doubt, the tremendous opportunities and developments that globalisation brings to countries. In the form of politics, economic, technology, services, entertainment, fashion, media and many other areas.
However, some countries have become “parasitic” in nature, only on the receiving side of globalisation and not contributing much to other countries.

The introduction of modern technologies have indeed contributed immensely to how cultural diversity cuts across. Homogenity of culture cannot be achieved as long as some generation of media theorists are focused on globalization as proliferation of diversity.Harvey and Giddens' view on time and space as well as the media creates more emphasis of how technology advancements have introduced more room for people to have access to their identity at any day, anytime.Time and space will continue to shrink and make the world a smaller globe as long as globalization is concerned.

There is no way cultures can be homogenious. The reason being that Africans' culture are different from that of the West. In terms of family settings, the African believes in collectivism whilst the Whites accepts individualism. So there is no way cultures can be homogenious.

Culture is dynamic, and it’s bound to change or be influenced some way some how , as a result of globalization most Farican cultures have been influenced especially in urban areas .I think the issue is that the whites have been able to brainwash most Africans to perceive everything that concerns them as special and superior .
But I believe changes are not entirely bad but if they have a negative impact then it becomes problematic

I think globalization is making the world the same. With the language, media content we consume, with our food and our lifestyle clearly depict that the world is loosing the rich diversity of cultures. And all this changes is helping one part of the world to develop to the detriment of another part of the world.

NUSEADELI AGORDO said...

Globalisation has developed standardisation for the world culturally, economically, and politically. However it is neither making the world same nor different as diverse people with their cultures come together as a result of industrialisation making it hard to give them a single cultural identity as bonded as they may look or with some common cultural identity of a kind.
Therefore, globalisation is rather making the world same differently as a result of diversity in doing the same thing worldwide.

I used to think,if homogenization unites the world and makes its different points such as cultural, economic or political, alike, then it's understandable that homogenisation is a characteristic of Globalization.
This assumption is mostly made based on the fact that homogenisation causes gradual erasure of differences. However, globalisation does not erase or delete differences as we are taught in our basic schools.

With regards to heterogenisation and homogenisation, I believe the two arguments are all true to an extent but we are experiencing more homogenisation because we have the spread of cultural goods usually coming from a single source (Western world) which dominates instead of the sources being multiple.
Moves like the adoption of pidgin English by the BBC is a step in the right direction in promoting heterogeneity
